Breaking Down Hate Speech

How can you create a community culture in which hate speech is unacceptable, both online and offline?

Define:

Hate Speech is speech that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or other traits.
Stereotype a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
Derogatory expressing a low opinion of someone or something : showing a lack of respect for someone or something

Ask:

  • What are some general ways that hate speech might be used online? 
  • What are some general ways that hate speech can be used in the offline world?

Watch:

PREPARE students for the video by explaining that what they are about to see may be harsh, but it illustrates the effects of hate speech. They should jot down any examples of hate speech they hear.

After watching the video ask the following questions:
  • What are some examples of hate speech from the video?
  • How do you think you might feel if you were the recipient of derogatory messages?
